DIY: Statement Necklace {gold, blue & white for summer)

I’ve been on the hunt for a cute new statement necklace for quite a while now, but couldn’t be satisfied with any of the ones I saw in the stores. That’s why I figured to do one on my own. I decided on the colours gold, white and blue because they’re easy to integrate into any summer outfit. Of course you can alter the colours, if you want to recreate this necklace.

You’ll need

large chain: 1 piece x 44cm, 2 pieces x 17cm, 2 pieces x 3cm

smaller chain: 1 piece x 8cm

blue cord

white string (not pictured)

fringe trim (about 17cm)

gold clasp

jump rings

needle & thread (I chose one matching the gold of the chain)

pliers (to open and close the chains and jump rings) & scissors

Step 1

Start off by threading your cord through your longer chain, carefully twisting it around the individual links of the chain.

When you’re done tie knots at the end and snip off the excess cord.

Now repeat this procedure on one of the shorter (17cm) chains.

Step 2

Next, take the shorter chain you just twisted your cord in and lay it onto your fringe trim. Sew both pieces together. I did this by stitching through the fringe trim on the backside and coming out into the cord part in the chain, because i figured this would be the securest way to get the chain and fringe together.

Step 3

In this step you’re going to add a next layer to you necklace by adding another empty chain. I simply laid the second smaller chain, with no cord inside of it, on top of the chain we just attached the fringe to, and sewed them together. From top to bottom you will now have this order: Empty chain, chain + cord, fringe.

Step 4

To attach this statement piece of the necklace to the actual necklace, I took a white string, tied it around the first link of the statement piece and then twist it onto the links of the largest chain, I mentioned in the first step. When you’re done, secure the string with a tight knot.

Step 5

Lastly, we’re going to add the closure of the necklace. For that I attached 3cm long pieces of the big chain to each side of the necklace.

Then I added a clasp on one side with a jump ring, and the small 8cm chain on the other side. This will allow you to adjust the length of your necklace, to wear it however you prefer.

… and voilà: your new statement necklace is ready to be worn!

Have fun recreating this fun statement necklace.
